Just Say It

There was a time when I would see my friends Jason and Ryan nearly everyday and when we would be leaving each other Jay would always tell Ryan and I that he loved us.

It seemed strange at first and I think he was only doing it to get a rise out of us, but he genuinely meant it. All he wanted in return was for us to say it back to him, but he wanted to hear the actual words “I love you”. I learned quickly that if I just said it back to him he would leave it be. Ryan on the other hand was always hesitant about saying the words and would simply reply “you too”.

One particular night Jay and I had just finished watching a Raptors game and were leaving Air Canada Centre and we decided we should call Ryan and see what he was doing.

He was with someone else that night, someone he was comfortable with, but there was no way he would be telling Jay that he loved him, not even over the phone. So when the conversation was over and Jay told Ryan that he loved him and Ryan replied “you too” it got ugly.

On a downtown Toronto street crowded with strangers Jay started to yell as loud as he could “Just say it Ryan! Tell me you love me! Are you ashamed? Why won’t you say that you love me?” This went on for what seemed like 15 minutes until finally Ryan said it.

There were buses lining the streets full of people and it felt like everyone of them were looking at Jay as he yelled into his phone at Ryan. I was a little embarrassed, but I was laughing so hard that it didn’t matter one bit.

Was it wrong that Jay wanted us to reciprocate his feelings for us back to him? Absolutely not. He knew full well how we felt about him, but now and again he needed to hear the actual words out of our mouth.

Every once and a while we need confirmation of something we already know. Whether that comes from verbalizing something internally like telling yourself that everything is going to be alright or if its more like Jay needed Ryan to tell him that he loved him.

There’s no shame in yelling at someone to just say it.

What do you need to hear?
