Questions You Should Never Ask During A Job Interview

Being successful at job interviews is a balancing act between being yourself and being who you need to be to get the job. At least that’s how I see it. Sometimes it’s not so much about being someone that you’re not as much as it’s about hiding who you really are from your prospective employer.

Here are some questions that you shouldn’t ask during a job interview.

Will you wait until tomorrow before you look at my Facebook, Twitter or other social media profile?

Keeping your work life and social life separate has gotten a lot harder with the increasing popularity of social networks and potential employers looking up your social media profiles to see what you are really like.

If you can keep them away from your profiles for a little while longer, you might just have a chance at getting that position.

Do you mind if I take this call? It’s about a better job offer.

No one likes hearing that they’re your second choice. Politely declining a job offer would likely be the best way to go about a situation where you have multiple offers, but if you can accept one offer while simultaneously rejecting another, who am I to stand in your way.

Can I see the break room?

Your potential employer might get the idea that you’re lazy or that you’re planning on spending a lot of time in the break room. In reality you just want to see it so you have an idea of a potential work area for when your co-workers are annoying you.

How late can I be to work without getting fired?

I’ve always said “The early bird gets the worm, but the second mouse gets the cheese” and I think that applies to how early you show up at your job. Ideally you want to be there early enough that they can’t fire you, but late enough that it doesn’t look like you’re trying to impress them.

How many warnings do I get before I’m fired?

I find this one very useful. It’s a measuring stick of an organization as to how much they are willing to let you get away with.

Does this company monitor internet usage?

Because I’ve got a blog and a lot of fantasy sports teams that I need to keep updated. So if you do I’m going to have to find a proxy server to get around that. Do you know any good ones?

What’s the policy on Columbus day?

The guy founded the new world for crying out loud and you want me to work. I want to celebrate and of course be paid still.

How much is my company discount?

Sometimes the best part of a job or perhaps the reason you work there is the company discount. If it’s not very much we may as well end this interview right now.

What is something else you shouldn’t ask during a job interview?
